Africana Studies Competitive Research Grant for Affiliated Faculty

The UA Africana Studies Program invites applications for small grants to support research activities of current Africana Studies affiliated faculty members. These research projects must directly benefit the Africana Studies Program's curriculum, students, prestige, and visibility. Preference will be given to proposals for new courses cross-listed in Africana Studies.

The application deadline is 4:00 p.m. on November 4, 2016.

One competitive grant of up to $5,000. 

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must be full-time and listed as "affiliated with Africana Studies" faculty at the University of Arizona on the following web site link: http://africana.arizona.edu/people/Faculty%20And%20Adjunct

Examples of expenses eligible for support from this grant:

  • Sabbatical replacement funds;
  • Summer/Winter salary or other types of supplemental compensation for faculty;
  • Equipment such as computers, iPads, printers, software, digital cameras, samplers, microphones, etc.;
  • Supplies and products for labs;
  • Expenses for domestic and international travel to conferences, workshops, archives, labs, performances, etc.;
  • Expenses related to final projects, books, articles, chapters;
  • Publication subventions;
  • Hiring of graduate research assistants;
  • Bring speakers on campus;
  • Create new courses cross-listed in AFAS;
  • Organize symposia and meetings on campus.

Examples of expenses NOT eligible for support from these grants:

  • Scholarship/cash stipend through Bursar’s account
  • Food and beverages

The funds will be transferred to the awardee's department.

Please submit the required application materials by no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 4, 2016. All materials should be submitted as attachments to a single e-mail to Marcela Thompson (marcelathompson@email.arizona.edu). Notification

The awardee will be notified approximately five weeks after the deadline. Grant funds must be used before July 1, 2017. 

EACH APPLICANT MUST PROVIDE:

1) A two page narrative (single spaced) clearly stating the project's description, objectives, and how it will benefit the Africana Studies Program's curriculum and its students;

2) A detailed budget;

3) A short CV (maximum 5 pages) that highlights teaching, research, and service applicable to project;

4) One letter of recommendation.
