The following two Africana Studies majors were selected for an Africana Studies Award of $8,500 each to help them attend our summer program in South Africa and Swaziland:
Congratulations to Kelsey McGee and Desiree Ranshaw!
I received the Study Abroad award of $8,500 to attend the program in South Africa and Swaziland this summer! I want to participate in this amazing program to have the chance to immerse myself in a new culture, gain an invaluable perspective on how structural conditions affect health and development, and obtain a true sense of my roots! I am honored and truly thankful for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thanks to the generous Africana Studies Program, I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to study abroad in South Africa and Swaziland this summer. It will be my first time outside of the United States and I am excited to have this extensive experience that will allow me to grow both personally and professionally. During my time there, I will be able to immerse myself in the global economy, local social structures, and rich cultures that South Africa has to offer while developing a deeper understanding of their community’s health and development. The knowledge I gain on this journey will come back to Arizona with me and be my launch pad for my journey to pursue my Medical Degree and Masters in Public Health. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon with which you can use to change the world.”
